Flax is an annual green leafy plant. It fruit are round pods which contain several seeds in each. These seeds are one of the many useful aspects of the plant. They are rich in minerals and vitamins as well as being one of the best plant sources of omega 3 fatty acids (containing between 45 and 60%).
Benefits:
Flax Seed Oil also contains vitamins B1, B2, C and E, carotene, iron, and zinc and trace amounts of magnesium, potassium, phosphorous, and calcium. As well as containing 45 - 60% omega 3 fatty acid, Flax Seeds are also a good source of linoleic acid, omega 6.
Flax Seeds contain large amounts of a phytonutrient called lignin. Many benefits have been attributed to this nutrient including being anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti tumor. Although scientifically unproven, research has shown that lignin may aid in the removal of excess estrogen from the body, therefore reducing the risk of estrogen related cancers such as breast cancer.
Besides its medicinal values, Flax Seed Oil is a delicious alternative to other oils on salad and in food recipes.
